Character Echoes
Over the last couple of weekends I’ve been revisiting a few shows that are 40+ years old and I noticed something kinda cool….
Do you guys remember Designing Women? Well, there was a a short-lived sitcom in 1982 called Filthy Rich. Delta Burke and Dixie Carter starred.
Watching Filthy Rich, you can see the prefiguration of the Sugarbaker sisters beginning to emerge.
Or how about Blake Edwards’ 10? Dudley Moore’s character, George Webber, goes to the dentist and ends up mixing the pain meds with alcohol
and you see the proto-character of Arthur Bach forming. Dudley was a brilliant physical comedian and during those scenes you can almost watch Arthur Bach
being born in real time.
Any Magnum P.I. fans? In 1984 Sharon Stone guest starred as Diane Dupres and Deirdre Dupres on the two part series “Echoes Of The Mind”.
When the Deirdre persona appeared I noticed character traits and a glimpse into the Catherine Tramell character that Sharon Stone would later perfect in Basic Instinct.
Great performances, though that particular episode always struck me as somewhat atypical for Magnum P.I.
It’s fascinating to watch actors unknowingly laying the groundwork for the performances that would eventually define their careers.
